Glazing Part 1

Finished Pinch Pot

Beginning of Coil Pot
It is important to wash your hands and wipe away dust before glazing so that the glaze sticks to the clay adequately.  you do not always need to apply wax resist, but if you are dunking your piece in the glaze then it is useful so no glaze sticks to the bottom.  The appropriate amount of time to keep your pot in contact with the glaze is one and a half seconds.  Bucket glazes are thinner than jug glazes, so a brush cannot effectively grab all of the particles from the glaze that need to go onto your piece.

Wheel

I have worked on the wheel for around five classes.  I have gotten the hang of centering, opening the clay, bringing it up, and bringing it down. I have been practicing on making the walls taller, and it has worked almost every time.  I really enjoy working on the wheel and I do not have any concerns.

Where I am today

Pinch pot after first firing

Base and first coil of coil pot
My pinch pot ended the way I wanted it too, although the clay did not always do what I wanted it to.  I had to press and push the sides of my pot to make it more symmetrical, and then I had to cut some of the clay off of the top rim to make it even.  I do not think that there is anything that I would change if I could.

Pinch Pot: Vase

Eye Level

Bird's Eye View
slip and score - To score your clay, you make the edge that you are going to connect with a coil or other clay jagged by scratching it. Then you add slip, which is a mixture of clay and water, to the jagged edges that you want to connect. This process helps hold the two pieces of clay together while they dry.

In order to make my piece symmetrical, I first had to make all of my clay an even width all the way around. Then I made sure the bottom was flat, so I had to push on the bottom/sides until it was equal.  After that I made the top equal in height by cutting off bits that were taller than the rest.  Then I used a sponge on the top edge to create a rounded lip on the whole top.

Otis Redding

Otis Redding has been a very influential in my life.  I play the guitar so music is very important to me.  Otis Redding was an American singer who sang soul music.  He has been referred to as the "King of Soul" due to his amazing abilities.  I chose Otis Redding as the person who influenced me because he was one of the first musicians to take music in a new direction.  Almost all of the music that I listen to or play was created from what Otis Redding did.  Although he was only twenty six when he died, Otis Redding changed music forever.
